THE IMPACT OF LEADERSHIP STYLES ON STAFF MOTIVATION IN AN ORGANISATION

CHAPTER ONE
1.0      INTRODUCTION
The concept of leadership and motivation refers to the process of obtaining cooperation, interest, loyalty and full participation of  the subordinates. The ability to influence the behaviour of others through inducing them on a particular direction for the attainment of an objective.
Any organization established must have aims and objectives, be it a profit oriented or a philanthropist organization. Thus it is composed of both the leaders and the led all performing one activity or the other rewards the attainment of the organizational objectives.
The focal point of this research study will be on the approaches to the study of leadership and motivation. The various leadership styles, and motivational theories, their application and the reaction of the subordinates.
This research study is therefore undertaken to review the different types of leadership styles otherwise known as management styles, motivational theories how they are applied and the reaction of the subordinates in an organizational set up with particular reference to United bank for Africa (UBA) PLC.

1.1      HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
United Bank for Africa (UBA) PLC  is a fully paid up public liability company registered to undertake the banking business in federal republic of Nigeria.
The bank has a fully paid up share capital of over the required five hundred million naira (500m) out of which 40% is owned by foreign while the remaining 60% is owned by the Federal Government companies and high net worth individuals. It is also affiliated to reputable banks and financial institutions all over the world.
UBA PLC has over the years been able to established branches throughout all the local government areas of the federation. The bank has taken its services to all nooks and crannies of Nigeria through its initiative agriculture schemes which has earned it the name “The farmers friend” it has therefore a huge asset base. Among the services of the bank is the provision of commercial banking activities to its corporate and individuals customers through the services offers includes: foreign exchange transaction, investment banking, granting of loans and advances, money market activities.
At the helm of affairs are the chairman and managing director, chief executive officer and a team of seasonal bankers. The bank has it corporate Headquarter at 97/105 Broad street Lagos but there is a plan to relocate the headquarter to Abuja the federal capital.

1.2    STATEMENT OF GENERAL PROBLEM
It is believed that action of management has a great impact on the motivation of employees to put in their best towards the attainment of organizational objectives. Studies have shown that employees are likely to be highly motivated and attain higher productivity in an organization when they are recognized as part of the organization, their effort adequately acknowledged, commendations and actions are constructively, objectively and fairly given than the organization characterized with one way pattern of communication, whereby employees daily work life is subject to insecurity, threats, unnecessary reprimands, forces and command without input or question from them.

1.3    OBJECTIVE/PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The study will be carried out for the following objectives/purpose:
a.           Discover the approaches to leadership
b.           Find out the various leadership/management styles, motivational theories and their applications in an organization.
c.           Reaction of subordinates to the management styles of leadership
d.           To make recommendations based on the findings from the study.

1.4    SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Many at times, organizations in an attempt to increase productivity of their workforce, focus attention on the areas of salaries and wages with less regard to good human or inter personal relation between the management and the employees.
Management tends to be coercive and autocratic in some cases while in some other situations it may adopt democratic and consultative approach. It is against this background that the study is carried out to determine what then constitute effective leadership in an organization.

1.5            HYPOTHESIS
The assumption upon which this research is based are developed  in the following hypothesis and are specifically based on the subject matter as follows:
Ho:   That there is no significant correlation between leadership styles and employees motivation.
Hi:    That there is significant correlation between leadership style and employee motivation.
Ho:   That there are not different types of leadership/management styles adopted in the organization.
Hi:    That there are different types of leadership/management styles adopted in the organization.

1.6      SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study will limits its scope to the leadership style and staff motivation needs of an employee in United Bank for Africa Plc in order to achieve greater productivity Emphasis will be placed on the employees of united Bank for Africa Plc where questionnaires will be administered and subsequently analyzed. Data analysis can be regarded as a good representative of Nigerian Bank with a view that whatever affects united bank for Africa plc, affects other banks of its nature and kind. However, the problems encountered were noted and solution proffered in the recommendation.

1.7      LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
In an academic study of this nature, it is envisaged that the researcher will be confronted with many problems, especially those relating to time and cost. This will no doubt, have certain effects on inclusions and deductions that would be made from the research.
In this case, time constraint on the part of the researcher and lack of fund has greatly limited my ability to further the research work.

1.8   DEFINITION OF TERMS
Leadership styles:  This is also known as management styles and it refers to a leaders typical way of behaving to his subordinates.
Motivation:  The driving force within an employee that determines his interest in his work.
Productivity:  employees output level.
Subordinates:  Employees in an organization other than the top management. Employees under the supervision of a superior officer.
Morale:  the perception of action directed towards a person. The power of the mind which knows or judges action to be right or wrong and determines conduct accordingly.
Commendation:  Praises/reward for acceptable performance or for meetings target.
Sanction:  Disciplinary actions for misconduct.
Reprimands:  Blames/queries for deviation from laid down procedures.
